During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of your body. The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat.
Cupping ~ This suction creates a negative pressure environment allowing for myofascial decompression as the skin is drawn into the cups. While massage therapy uses direct pressure to release tension, cupping uses negative pressure to lift the muscle fibers and increase blood flow to the area. Several purported benefits of cupping include reduced pain, muscle tightness and inflammation, improved blood flow (circulation), and increased range of motion.
Gua Sha ~ A healing technique of traditional East Asian medicine that uses a crystal gemstone to apply pressure and move the skin to relieve pain and tension. Can cause bruises & redness. But in the process clears stagnation and accumulation, promotes lymphatic drainage and cell renewal, renews facial contour, firm and lifts sagging skin, reduces inflammation and puffiness, diminishes blemishes, and relieves tension.
