Seasonal Support: Elderberry Syrup Recipe
As cold and flu season sets in, it is extremely important to support our immune systems so that they can fight off infection. Elderberries are one of the best plant allies to combat both viral and bacterial infections. They are packed with antioxidants, minerals and Vitamin C, and they have the ability to substantially shorten the length of a cold or flu. Elderberries also provide respiratory support because they can help to loosen and remove phlegm. This Elderberry Syrup recipe is both easy and fun to make. It is powerful but gentle enough for children and safe to use during pregnancy.
INGREDIENTS:
4 cups water
1/2 cup dried elderberries
1 tbsp powdered ginger
1/2 cup raw honey
Add the water, elderberries and powdered ginger to a medium sized saucepan. Cook on medium-high heat for 45 minutes to and hour until the liquid is reduced by half and begins to thicken. Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool. Strain everything through a nut milk bag (or cut a piece of fabric from a sheet you no longer want) and squeeze to get all of the goodness out. Compost the berries and whisk the honey into the mixture. Transfer into jars and store in the fridge to extend it's shelf life.
To help you recover from a cold or flu, take 1 tbsp up to 3 times per day. For daily support take 1 tbsp per day.
